The much awaited 2013 Skoda Octavia has made its debut in India. And with that, the Czech carmaker has brought back the Octavia nameplate, three years after the demise of the original model.
The new Octavia is the first model in India to carry Skoda’s new global design language. Based on Volkswagen’s MQB, the car is not only bigger, but also lighter than the current Laura. Skoda says that they have increased the car’s length and width. The new Octavia, in fact, is 90 mm longer and 45 mm wider than the earlier generation model. At the same time, the wheelbase has grown by 108 mm, mainly benefiting the interior and space at the back.
The Octavia takes design inspiration from the VisionD and MissionL Concept that Skoda has shown in the last couple of years. The new model is sleeker than the outgoing Laura and therefore appears sportier as well. Under the hood, three engines options – 1.8-litre TSI, 1.4-litre TSI and 2-litre TDI will be offered with the new Octavia. The smaller 1.4-litre unit is the new addition to the range.
Skoda has also confirmed that production for the 2013 model is underway and that the current Laura will be phased out when the new Octavia comes out sometime during this festive season. With prices expected to start around the Rs 13 lakh region, it seems the new Octavia is ought to give its competitors a mighty tough time.
