Maruti Suzuki will launch the Wagon R Stingray next week as the vehicle has reached stockyards of some dealers. This premium version of the Maruti Wagon R is offered in three variants LXi, VXi and VXi with option pack. The option pack of the Maruti Wagon R Stingray consists of ABS, driver side airbag, steering mounted audio controls, electrically adjustable rear view mirrors and projector headlights. Maruti Suzuki will price the Wagon R Stingray between Rs. 4.1 to Rs. 4.9 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi), which is around Rs. 50,000/- more than the regular Wagon R. The difference between the regular Wagon R and Wagon R Stingray is not really vast. Both cars use the same underpinnings but the Stingray looks more aggressive due to its bold styling. The front-end is quite boxy instead of smooth flowing, something different and unique in the Indian market. Projector headlights are a first in this segment and a body kit is present too. On the interior front, we had a glimpse and the dashboard is similar to the regular model but gets piano black finishing. A multi-information display has been added which shows distance to empty range. Powering the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R Stingray is the same old 1.0-litre, K-Series petrol engine. This 3-cylinder motor generates 68 PS of power and 90 Nm of torque, linked to a 5-speed manual transmission. No diesel engine will be offered at the moment but the company will bring in a small capacity oil burner in the Wagon R next year. The old Wagon R will continue to perform duties as it is and the Stingray will have no effect on its positioning. Now the crucial question is, will hatchback buyers pay an extra Rs. 50,000/- for the Stingray over the regular WagonR? We have our doubts.
